New novelist Jon Renard of 'Dereliction of Duty' recently commented that 'Prelude to Danger' is an intriguing look inside the difficult and complex world of the U.S. Secret Service. Through his main character, Agent Gene Carey, Mr. Sample shows readers the stress and challenges faces everyday by these silent professionals charged with keeping our Presidency safe from harm. Mr. Sample also weaves tidbits of Presidential history into the story that could never be found in any history books. This story brings an often overlooked Law Enforcement Agency to the forefront and highlights it's commitment to protecting this country. Great Job William!! His eyes began to focus and hands began to sweat from the relentless stress and increasing tension of completing this mission. Everything was directed toward the target that intended to kill the president. The counter-sniper was focused on disrupting or destroying any assassin. The assassin had to be taken out at all costs. Not later, not tomorrow, but now. Any delay would be too late and would radically change the course of history. Focus directly on the subject, aim, and gently squeeze the trigger. That was all it required. It seemed very simple on the surface. But it would test his mind-set. You trained countless hours for this opportunity. But pause and wait a few seconds until the steady wind settles down slightly. Any wind deviation would definitely affect the shot. But missing the first shot is not an option. No room for error and no turning back. Conditions had to be near prefect to get it right. Focus only on the target and nothing else. Focus, focus, and focus again and blank out everything else around you—just as you trained to do. Everything eventually settled into place. The time was right. The shooter carefully aligned the shot and without hesitation slowly squeezed the trigger. The popping sound from his highly specialized rifle echoed through the room, yet it was subtle enough that it took slightly less than a second to find its target. The target did not immediately move at first; rather, moments passed as the target began to lean over into some low bushes behind him. The bullet was aimed at and struck the top of his head. The target seemed completely stunned by the impact of the single bullet and was convincingly compromised.
